Scope and Contents

The Janet L. de Vries Papers consist of programs for productions of the Laramie Project at Casper College and Stage III, advertisements and flyers for the Matthew Shephard Foundation, a copy of the fall 1999 University of Wyoming Magazine article, “Reflections on a Tragedy” by Milton D. Ontivoeroz, and local and national articles, editorials, and opinions on the murder of Matthew Shephard and the trials of Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney. Researchers will also find articles, correspondence, and press releases on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act legislation, a copy of a poem dedicated to the family of Matthew Shephard, and related information. In addition to information on the murder of Matthew Shephard, there are materials related to the Girl Scouts inncluding handbooks, history, photographs, and uniform items. Researchers will also find materials and records related to the Wyoming Culture Fest and Wyoming Grassroots Project. Some of the Girl Scouts materials date back to 1942, the Matthew Shepard material dates from between 1998 and 2018, Wyoming Culture Fest from 1994-2000, and Wyoming Grassroots Project from 1995-2004.

The Janet L. de Vries Papers are arranged into the following series: Girl Scouts, Matthew Shephard, Wyoming Culture Fest, and Wyoming Grassroots Project. The Girl Scouts uniform items have been described at the end of the record.

Physical Location

Boxes 1 and 2 are located at 212-Q-3H-3.5-5.0; box 3 is located on the artifact and object shelf in 212 along the south wall.

Existence and Location of Copies

The Wyoming Culture Fest photographs have been digitized to an extent but are not currently saved to our standards.
