Administrative/Biographical History
The Texas Company (later known as Texaco) refinery in Casper was part of a wider post–World War I boom in Wyoming oil refining. It became one of several major plants clustered around Casper in the early 1920s. Over the decades, the refinery continued operating under the Texaco name as part of the company’s broader refining system. In the early 1980s, amid declining demand and an oversupplied gasoline market, Texaco shut down several U.S. refineries, including the Casper plant, which closed in 1981–1982. In the 1990s the former refinery site underwent major environmental remediation, including removal of more than 90,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and installation of a subsurface barrier wall to protect the nearby North Platte River. The cleanup allowed redevelopment of former refinery lands in Casper and left the Texas Company refinery remembered as a key piece of the city’s early‑ to mid‑20th‑century oil era.
