Scope and Contents
The Alfred J. Mokler Papers consist of approximately 10 linear feet of material in 16 standard sized archival boxes, 2 open trays, and 2 oversize document boxes and date from approximately 1830 to 1980. The collection contains hundreds of documents spanning Mokler's long career as a writer, editor, historian, and public figure in Casper, Wyoming, as well as some significant amount of material from his private life.
Mokler wrote about and was interested in researching a broad variety of topics, but particular strengths of the collection include his writings regarding the history of the Western United States, Natrona County and Casper in particular. Materials include manuscripts both typed and handwritten that Mokler either wrote himself or was credited on as an editor, publishing records and information, diaries and ledgers, personal and professional correspondence, photographs, historical interest scrapbooks, and records of clubs and organizations run by Mokler. Researchers may find useful material relating to the pioneer and early settler history of Casper and Natrona county, key historical figures of the West who were active in the region, and materials relating to the organization and management of various Casper-based literary and historical organizations under Mokler's leadership including the Masonic Temple of Casper, the Casper Literary Club, the Natrona County Tribune (which would later become the Casper Star-Tribune), and the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writer's Project.
The collection is arranged into 7 series: 1 - Alfred J. Mokler's Writings and Editorial Copies, 2- Letterboxes, Research and Interest Materials, and Scrapbooks, 3 - Club and Organization Documents, 4 - Alfred J. Mokler's Personal Papers, 5 - Photographs and Print Blocks, 6 - Natrona County and Wyoming History Index Cards, 7 - Large Documents, Certificates, Newspapers, and Blueprints.
Many of the writings and photographs in the collection by Mokler or authors of the Casper Literary Club, Casper Writer's Club, Natrona County Tribune/Casper Star-Tribune, or Federal Writer's Project may still be under the copyrights of their respective authors and publishers.
